Donald Dean Schmidt, age 63, of Elwood, Nebraska passed away on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at Elwood Care Center in Elwood, Nebraska. He was born on June 30, 1946 in Holdrege, Nebraska to Bernard & Ruth (Swanson) Schmidt.

He attended school at Holdrege High School and graduated with the Class of 1968. During high school he worked as a bellboy at the Hotel Dale in Holdrege, Nebraska. After graduation he worked for Swift Beef Packing at Gordon, Nebraska and helped build grain bins. He then moved to Greeley, Colorado and worked for Monfort Beef Packing. He would move to Fresno, California where he worked for Fig Packing Plant and later for a large dairy, helping milking cows. While in California, he cleaned and worked dishes for a couple of different night clubs. He moved back to Elwood, Nebraska in April of 1997. He attended church at the Salvation Army in Holdrege until it later closed. He enjoyed hunting, playing cards, puzzles, listening to country western music, and reading western books.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Milan Schmidt, infant brother Bernard Schmidt.

He is survived by Sisters: Kay & husband Dennis Evans of Elwood, Nebraska

Viewing & visitation will be Friday, January 29 from 10 AM till 8 PM at Elwood Funeral Home, Elwood, Nebraska. Funeral services will be Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 10:30 AM at the United Methodist Church, in Elwood, Nebraska with Pastor Linda Newman, officiating. Interment will be at Prairie Home Cemetery, Holdrege, Nebraska. Memorials may be given to the Elwood Care Center or donor’s choice.
