Dorothy Elaine Salisbury, age 85, died on Tuesday, October 24, 2017, from complications from strokes associated
with brain bleeds. She was born to Guy and Edith Salisbury on July 30, 1932 at the family farm in rural Elwood
Nebraska. She was welcomed by her step-sister Mildred Salisbury Delp and her step-brother Robert Salisbury.
After attending a one room country school, Elwood High School, and two years of study at the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln, Elaine married her high school sweetheart James Douglas Remmenga (Skeet) on October 2,
1953, following his service in the Korean War. They were blessed with four children, Brenda Remmenga Avery,
Guylyn Remmenga Cummins, Ronn Douglas Remmenga, and Jeanne Dee Remmenga who passed away in May
1979 from a brain bleed.
Following Skeet’s death in September 1974 from a brain tumor, Elaine worked for Nebraska Senator William
Barrett, and at Farmer’s State Bank in Lexington, Nebraska.
In 1983, Elaine moved to La Jolla California to be near her children, all of whom reside in California. She
continued to work in banking, and then in political fundraising for the Republication Party. She greatly enjoyed
meeting various U.S. Presidents and other dignitaries in this position, and contributing to the political process.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Elaine had five grandchildren. Elyse Elaine Cummins (29) and James Blake Cummins
(24) were born to Guylyn and her husband Scott Cummins, who married in 1980. Wade Christopher Avery (24),
Gavin James Avery (22), and Weston Ford Avery (20) were born to Brenda and her husband, Regan Avery, who
married in 1991.
During her life, Elaine was an active member of her church, the Torrey Pines Christian Church of La Jolla, serving
on its governing board and various committees, as well as selflessly offering her time to community activities.
But most of all, Elaine loved being a doting grandmother to her five grandchildren, and a loving parent to her
children and son-in-laws.
She is survived by Brenda and Regan, Wade, Gavin, and Weston Avery, Guylyn and Scott, Elyse and Blake
Cummins, and Ronn Remmenga, her brother Robert Salisbury, and many nieces, nephews and cousins in
Nebraska and throughout the country.
A family service and celebration of life will take place in La Jolla, CA. on October 29th followed by burial in
Elwood Cemetery, Elwood, Nebraska on November 4th. A reception will be held at the Elwood United Methodist
Church November 4, 2017 from 1-3 PM. Elwood Funeral Home of Elwood, Nebraska is in charge of local
arrangements.
