Dorothy Elizabeth (Hansen) Fiene

Dorothy Elizabeth (Hansen) Fiene, age 79, passed away Sunday, July 23, 2017 at CHI Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska. She was born April 24, 1938 to Otto Herbert Hansen and Elizabeth (DeBoer) Hansen at the family home in Elwood, Nebraska. She was baptized in May 1938 in the Methodist Church in Elwood. She attended grade school and high school in Elwood and graduated in 1955. Following High School, she attended Bonnell Beauty Academy in Hastings, Nebraska and graduated with a degree in Cosmetology. Upon graduating, she went to Lexington and worked for Modern Beauty Shop. Halloween night 1950, she met Ernest E Fiene, Jr. of rural Frontier County. They were married on June 16, 1957 in the Methodist Church in Elwood. They spent their honeymoon in New Orleans, Louisiana. Dorothy was confirmed in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood. Dorothy soon opened her own beauty salon Modern Style Salon in Elwood until 1970. She then obtained her Real Estate license and worked with Brell Real Estate. On August 10, 1961, a daughter Shannon Elizabeth was born. On Christmas Eve 1963, another daughter Sue Ann was born. On January 16, 1968, a son Jonathan Edward was born. Dorothy continued her real estate career, and in 1985 she and friends opened The Gingerbread Shoppe in Elwood. They closed the shop in 2004, and in 2006, Dorothy opened another gift shop, Tres Chic, for two years until her health caused her to retire. Dorothy and Ernie built a beautiful home on Johnson Lake in 1996 where they enjoyed many beautiful sunsets. Dorothy was active in Girl Scouts, church choir, Elwood Arts Council, Chamber of Commerce, LWML/Ladies Aid and was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. She is survived by her husband Ernie Fiene, Jr. of Johnson Lake, Nebraska; three children: Shannon Williams of Lincoln, Sue (and Greg) Bruening of Omaha, and Jonathan (and Dixie Carr) Fiene of Elwood; grandchildren: Taylor Dennis, Derek (and Oksana) Dennis, Brock Williams, Alexander Bruening, Erik Bruening, Justin (and Alexa) Kraus, and Keegan Strohl; great-grandson: Ryder Kraus; sisters: Althea Schroeder and Lola Debban; brother: Donald Hansen; sister-in-laws: Marilyn Frost, Carleen Fiene and Hilda Hansen; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Dorothy is preceded in death by her mother and father; brothers: Howard Hansen and Lowell Hansen; brother-in-laws: Donald Fiene, Eldon Fiene, Carroll Schroeder, Bill Debban, Glen Davis, and Dan McGrath; sister-in-laws: Winnie Hansen, Inez Hansen, Leoda Davis, Deloris McGrath, and Louise Fiene. Funeral services to be held at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Elwood, Nebraska, on Friday, July 28, 2017 at 10 AM with Rev. Michael Wolff, officiating. Interment will be at Elwood Cemetery, Elwood, Nebraska. There is no viewing or visitation as these were Dorothy’s wishes. Memorials are suggested to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church or in her name to be designated later. Elwood Funeral Home of Elwood, Nebraska is in charge of the arrangements.
