John F. Lund, age 96, of Bertrand, Nebraska passed away peacefully with family, on Monday, March 3rd, 2025, at
his home. He was born on May 18, 1928, in Plainview, Nebraska to Alfred and Marie (Schmidt) Lund. He was the
second born of seven children, having 3 sisters and 3 brothers.
John grew up on a ranch east of Clearwater, Nebraska. He was drafted into the Army during the Koren War and
served two years in Germany. When he returned home, he met Ruth E. Broemer. They were married in 1954 and
lived on a farm east of Clearwater. They had three sons: Jack, Steve, and Scott. In 1969, they sold the farm and
moved to Elwood, Nebraska where he worked for the city while acquiring his city street superintendent license.
Later in 1973, the family moved to Bertrand to fill a job opening for the city. In 1983, John took a job at Bertrand
Irrigation as a mechanic and in 1985 he put up his own repair shop as John’s repair where he remained until
retiring.
Some of John’s greatest pleasures were being a dad, always showing interest in what his sons were doing and
willing to help if he could. He liked old airplanes made in the late 40’s and flying them. They had one on the
ranch to make quick work out of checking cows and water tanks at the windmills. After selling his farm he bought
another just for pleasure and shared it with his sons.
John liked people and having them around. He would never turn down an opportunity to visit with someone in
his later years.
John and Ruth celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on August 3, 2024.
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters: Betty Walters and husband Ivan; Bernice Briza and
husband Don; three brothers: Melvin Lund and wife Elaine; Roland Lund and wife Bernadine; and Leroy Lund
and wife Juanita; and brothers-in-law: George (Joe) Broemer; Frank Torres.
John leaves to celebrate his life, his wife, Ruth; three sons: Jack Lund, Steve Lund, and Scott Lund and his wife
Bretta; Three grandchildren: Zeb Lund (Danielle Skarp); Jessetta (Ross) Poyser and son, Boyd; and Jose Lund;
sister-in-law: PokSun Broemer; and sister Arlene Torres, along with many nieces, nephews, and relatives.
There will be a memorial gathering and celebration of his life set at a later date. Elwood Funeral Home is in
charge of the arrangements.
