Oscar Edward Stoll, age 100, of Elwood, Nebraska passed away on Wednesday, June 19th, 2024, at Elwood
Assisted Living in Elwood Nebraska. He was a lifelong Gosper County resident, was born on September 30,
1923, to Edward and Theadora (Pfeiffer) Stoll in the Gosper Community.
Oscar was baptized at Salem Lutheran Church in rural Gosper County on November 11, 1923. He attended the
Gosper school, District 15, through 6th grade and then Salem Lutheran School for 7th and 8th grade.
He attended Elwood High School and graduated in May, 1941. He farmed with his father until he was drafted
for military service in 1943. On September 30, 1944, he reported to Camp Kilmer in New Jersey for processing
to ship overseas. They disembarked October, Friday the 13th on a converted passenger ship, and arrived in
England on Oct. 26th. On December 9th they were shipped to the Heurgten Forest and were attacked by the
Germans on the 13th. December 16th the Battle of the Bulge began, and he served throughout the Battle of the
Bulge. He was one of the first to cross the bridge at Remagen. Oscar was discharged at Fort Leavenworth on
January 31, 1946, and returned home to the farm on February 1st.
He continued to farm with his father. They were both members of Salem Lutheran Church until it closed in 1966.
Since that time Oscar has been a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood. He was a good neighbor
to all and could call up any detail of the Stoll and Pfeiffer families and the Gosper community. In November,
2022 Oscar was recognized by the local post of the American Legion/Auxiliary for his military service. This past
September Oscar celebrated his 100th birthday with family and friends. In November he moved to the Elwood
Assisted Living Facility.
Oscar is preceded in death by his parents, Edward H. Stoll and Theadora Pfeiffer Stoll, his brother Andrew and
his sister Esther Grabenstein. He is survived by his nieces and nephews. Viewing and visitation will be Tuesday,
June 25, 2024, from 5 PM to 7 PM at Elwood Funeral Home, in Elwood, Nebraska. Funeral services will be
Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at 10 AM at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood, Nebraska with Rev. Aaron
Witt, officiating. Interment will follow at Arapahoe Cemetery, Arapahoe Nebraska with military rites given by
the Elwood American Legion and the Nebraska Army/National Guard Funeral Honor Guard. Memorials are
suggested to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood, Nebraska. Elwood Funeral Home of Elwood, Nebraska
is in charge of the arrangements.
