Robert “Bob” Lowell Salisbury, 98, of Lexington, Nebraska, died Thursday, December 21, 2017, in
Lexington.
Bob was born September 19, 1919, in rural Gosper County to Guy and Emma (Dreher) Salisbury. The
family moved to the farm three miles northwest of Elwood in 1926. He was a 1936 graduate of Elwood
High School and then joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC camp), serving for two years as part
of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal legislation.
Bob returned briefly to the family farm before being drafted in 1941 to serve in the US Army, just one
week prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Serving in the Third Armored Division, Bob was engaged
in Northern France, Central Europe, Normandy, Rhineland, and Ardennes. He saw action driving a
Sherman tank liberating St Lo and in the Battle of the Bulge. Bob was awarded the Bronze Star for
courageously pulling an injured commander to safety from a burning tank during the Battle of the
Bulge. He was wounded in action February 26, 1945 in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater
and awarded a Purple Heart. He was also awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, European
Theater Ribbon, and American Defense Service Ribbon.
Bob was a farmer in Gosper County his entire life other than the time spent in service to his country.
He was an avid fan of Nebraska football and the Kansas City Royals baseball.
Left to mourn his loss are nieces Karla Delp Milanette, Brenda Remmenga Avery, Guylyn Remmenga
Cummins and nephews Terry Delp and Ronn Remmenga, extended family and many friends. Bob was
preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Mildred “Mick” Delp and D. Elaine Remmenga and niece
Jeanne Dee Remmenga.
There will be no viewing or visitation. Graveside services will be Friday, December 29, 2017 at 2 PM at
Elwood Cemetery, Elwood, Nebraska with Pastor Soonil Park, officiating with reception following at the
First United Methodist Church in Elwood, Nebraska. Military rites will be given by the Elwood American
Legion and the Nebraska National Guard Honor Guard. Memorials are suggested to the Elwood
American Legion, the Elwood Foundation or the Heartland Museum of Military Vehicles. Elwood Funeral
